Club Mexicana at Spread Eagle - Homerton

Totally vegan pub, 'The Spread Eagle' in Homerton is home to the very famous 'Club Mexicana'. I've been meaning to go for ages, so jumped at the chance when my friend wanted to meet in there!

It's interior is creatively put together, super fun, and homely, with pictures everywhere, a central bar, friendly and fun bar staff and a truly quirky small garden at the back. The garden has clearly had so much thought put into it, and it looks incredible.

The whole place is pretty aesthetically pleasing, even including the toilets...

Since they only serve vegan food, the options are more vast. I'm used to having this much choice in vegan restaurants but it felt so good to have in a pub setting.

We started with nachos, you can't see clearly from the photo but they'd drizzled them with chilli oil which was a super tasty touch, the nachos themselves were definitely of high quality, the thick, crunchy, not heavily salted kind. Plus, probably what you can see from the photo is that the salsa and guacamole were so fresh! I don't think I've had nachos with such fresh accompaniments out of my own home before. They've used fresh and simple ingredients, combined them well and it was amazing, highly recommend.

My friend chose the super juicy, super topped 'Club Mex Cheezeburger' and reported that it was deliciously juicy, and drenched in vegan cheesiness! She's not very big and the burger was enormous! It doesn't come with any sides but I'd say it was plenty for a meal.

I thought it was a good idea to explore the tacos, they offer 3 for £10, so I had the 'Jackfruit barbacoa tacos' (Left), 'Chorizo and sweet potato tacos' (Top), and 'Tempeh bacon tacos' (Right).

They were all tasty, but my favourite was the chorizo and sweet potato, the blend of tang, creaminess from the mayo, and kick from the jalapeños was such an awesome combo, plus I loved the chorizo/sweet potato base.

My next favourite was the jackfruit, which had a tangy citrus flavour, which was topped off with a delicious combination of fresh veg and pickles, it didn't have so much of a spicy kick to it, and was more of a fresh taste in comparison to the others.

The tempeh bacon tacos tasted really meaty, so if that's what you're after then you will love! The flavours surrounding it were good, spicy, tangy and flavourful, but I found the seitan a little tough and thick. I think that this is largely to do with the fact that I grew up vegetarian, so these kind of flavours and textures are a little strange for me in huge amounts, but I'm sure anyone that misses meat would really appreciate it.

All in all, they've made some serious effort with their food, they've used really fresh ingredients, been pretty creative, paid attention to the surroundings and made them look so beautiful, have friendly and fun staff, plus prompt service, I can't really fault them!
