Cookies & Scream (Holloway Road)
Cookies and Scream is an entirely vegan bakery near Holloway Road station, infamous for their vegan cookie sandwiches.
Cookies and scream looks sweet but unassuming from the outside, its a small little place with bar stools around the counter and a couple of tables.
Like most small places, you walk straight into the area where the counter is, and it feels like the pressure is on to order right away. However, the manager there was relaxed and friendly, and suggested I try the cookie sandwich. I'd seen this pictured many times on social media and understood it to be pretty legendary, so happily selected that.
There are several variations of cookie sandwich so ordering can be quite fun, there were 3 different types of cookies when I was there, and I went for a double chocolate cookie base and an oat cookie top.
Then there is a choice of filling... ice cream or vegan butter icing, I chose vegan butter icing, be aware that they serve you an absolute mountain of it!
The cookies were delicious, they have a healthy, homemade, oaty feel to them, the kind of cookies that someone has made from scratch (which admittedly is probably exactly what they are). The frosting was excellent, it was super sweet and went really well with the cookies.
As I'm sure everyone can tell, the whole thing is super thick, there is no way I could eat it sandwich style, it is actually quite huge for one person also but delicious and I'm sure (like me) most people would be able to manage, although it does get pretty sickly towards the end!
There were plenty of other sweet treats for sale, all of them looked delicious, and all of them had that homemade feel to them.
I will definitely be back, they scored lower for setting and ambience but they aren't the kind of place that sets themselves up for this, go for the cookie sandwiches and the nice staff in a chilled cafe!
