Gelatorino - Kew Gardens/Covent Garden
Updated: Oct 15, 2019
Between Kew Gardens and Richmond underground stations is the Italian Cafe/Gelato shop 'Gelatorino'. It is one of 2 a part chain so if Kew Gardens is too far for you, the branch in Covent Garden has the same vegan offerings!
The cafe is small, simple and modern, staff are friendly and seem genuinely enthusiastic about vegan food (and about food in general).

Vegan options here are not extensive but I appreciate the step in that direction. They offer vegan cake, filled vegan croissants, granola with vegan yogurt, and of course sorbets!! I tried all of them, plus one of their lattes with coconut milk (they have 4 types of plant milk available)

I'm going to talk about the croissants first as they were my favourite, I've never had a croissant like it! First of all, they were pre filled with a jam from Italy, which is 80% fruit, and then its covered in a crunchy glaze that makes it taste slightly of a hot crossed buns. It's honestly the best croissant I've ever had!

I went for the mango and raspberry sorbet because I couldn't decide between the four flavours (they also offer lemon and passionfruit). I never used to give sorbet credit for being sweeter, fruiter and more zingy than ice cream but it totally is! So refreshing too.
They used a plastic spoon to serve but let me know that actually the restaurant is otherwise plastic free and the plastic spoons have at least have been sourced to be biodegradable.

The apple and grape vegan cake was sweet, solid and tasted a bit like a Bakewell tart, with a subtle almond flavour through the sponge, it was really tasty and I loved the chequered presentation.

I would definitely come back for the croissants, they were the most incredible breakfast item ever! Overall I was really happy, staff were friendly and pleasant, pricing was pretty standard and everything I had was delicious! I'd love to see them add more vegan main options to their menu in the future (omni's also have sandwich options) but overall I was super impressed with what I had!
